Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SCOST), Jammu has applied for GI tagging of Bhaderwahi Rajma in the Geographical Indication Department, Delhi. From here the application has been sent to the registration office located in Chennai.

Bhaderwahi Rajma will get GI tagging by September

Now GI tagging is yet to be finalized. According to Scott Jammu, Bhaderwahi Rajma will get GI tagging by September. However, even before this, Rajma is sent to other states of the country. Bhadarwahi Rajma is delicious to eat. People buy more of it.

Price can be up to Rs 250 after GI tagging

In Jammu and Kashmir, this rajma is currently being sold at Rs 200 per kg. After GI tagging, the price can be up to Rs 250. Farmers are also being motivated to increase its cultivation through Agriculture University. Rajma is being cultivated in 800 hectares of land in the state and it gives a yield of about 1800 metric tonnes.

Specially identified crops have GI tagging

GI tagging is for such crops, which have different qualities and identities in a particular area. Earlier GI tanging of saffron has been done. It is processed in three stages. In the first stage, the application is screened, in the second stage, the scrutiny is done on a trial basis. In the third phase, the approval for GI tagging of the crop is given by the Geographical Indication Department based in Chennai.
